Education with Character

Whilst academic success is very important, at Cornerstone we believe that there is more to a good education.

As well as ensuring our students succeed in exams, we aim to develop character, compassion and service.  Throughout their time at Cornerstone, students are expected to contribute to our school community and to society.  We want students to try things they cannot do, to persist in the face of difficulty and to become resilient in overcoming obstacles.

With this in mind, we provide a breadth of opportunities and experiences which seek to help our students become confident, well-rounded and ambitious young adults.

Our curriculum and enrichment programme is overflowing with opportunities to try something new and develop new skills.

In addition to our very wide range of extracurricular clubs, our students enjoy trips both locally, nationally and internationally, university visits, talks from inspirational speakers from the worlds of medicine, law, sport and business as well as countless opportunities to collaborate with their peers at United Learning Academies across the country.

We are incredibly proud to deliver an Education with Character; an education which challenges, inspires and excites our students and prepares them for the ups and downs of life.

At The Cornerstone Academy we have introduced an Education with Character Passport and award scheme to recognise the achievement of students as they develop their character. We provide opportunities for students to take part in activities that reflect our values in the following pillars:

  • Ambition - to achieve the best for ourselves and others
  • Confidence - to have the courage of our convictions and to take risks in the right cause
  • Creativity - to imagine possibilities and make them real
  • Respect - for ourselves and others in all that we do
  • Enthusiasm - to seek opportunity, find what is good and pursue talents and interests
  • Determination - to overcome obstacles and reach success

During their time at the academy, students can accrue evidence for each of these values and the more they achieve, the higher the award. The awards start with Bronze and students can graduate up to Platinum and we challenge them to reach the CORNERSTONE STAR award. The awards are also linked to good attendance and accruing merits in and out of lessons. In this we recognise and value their personal developments as well as their contribution to the academy and the wider community.
