Literacy

Literacy is fundamental for all students to be successful. Here at The Cornerstone Academy, we approach every lesson as an opportunity to improve literacy skills and are working to empower every member of staff to feel they can support students' literacy development.  

As a school, our literacy strategy is based upon the 7 recommendations to improve literacy in secondary schools - researched and written by the EEF. 

• Prioritise ‘disciplinary (subject-specific) literacy’ across the curriculum. 
• Provide targeted vocabulary instruction in every subject. 
• Develop students’ ability to read complex academic texts. 
• Break down complex writing tasks. 
• Combine writing instruction with reading in every subject. 
• Provide opportunities for structured talk.
• Provide high quality literacy interventions for struggling students.
