The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Overview

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the world’s leading achievement award for young people. Here at Cornerstone Academy we offer a comprehensive and active programme of delivery to our young people. Year 9 pupils are invited to register for the Bronze Award in the Autumn Term and Year 10 pupils are invited to register for the Silver Award. As well as the expedition element, pupils also complete three further sections; volunteering, physical, and skill.  A number of activities are on offer at Cornerstone to help pupils with these requirements such as, litter picking, photography, various sports, drama and music. Pupils enrolled on the award meet regularly each week to learn about the skills necessary to complete an expedition, such as camp-craft, navigation and first aid. The group have three expeditions during the year, a training expedition, a practice expedition and a qualifying expedition. These are often held in The New Forest, The Purbecks and Dartmoor and they will normally cover 15-20 miles over two days. The award is designed to encourage pupils to take responsibility for themselves, in terms of planning, organising and completing the different activities. It broadens horizons and gives pupils the opportunity to try new activities they might not otherwise have tried.
