KS4 RSL Level 2 Creative & Performing Arts: Dance

Course Description

The RSL Technical Award for Creative and Performing Arts is a level 2 qualification, so carries the same weight as a GCSE.

Dance is a two year course which includes practical and theoretical elements. Dance at The Cornerstone Academy is an exciting way to broaden knowledge about the professional dance world and to develop students as both choreographers and performers. It also gives opportunity to improve physical, technical, expressive and mental skills.  Students will study professional works which enable students to explore various dance styles. This may be through video or live performance. There are 2 units that students will study which include an ensemble dance performance and a live performance. The written work and practical work are marked in conjunction with each other and a grade for the unit is then awarded (Pass, Merit or Distinction).

Assessment

Unit 1: Ensemble Dance Performance

This unit is internally assessed and externally moderated. It introduces and develops skills to improve the student's ability to reproduce and perform technical movements from a professional work with a group and develop and perform a style specific sequence. This unit enables the development of dance technique and performance, choreographic skills and an understanding of a dance style.  Students are assessed on the live performance of the ensemble dance along with a record of all the progress they have made, contributions, identification of strengths and weaknesses and how they intend to improve.

Unit 2: Core Unit - Live Performance

This is an externally assessed unit set by the exam board. Students are provided with a brief which includes a set stimuli. students are to use this to choreograph a 2- 6 minute dance. There is the opportunity to explore all the skills required for a live performance. These range from planning, creating, rehearsing, the performance itself and an evaluative reflection required post-performance to ensure continual development as performers.

By undergoing the process of preparing for a live performance, students will have the opportunity to experience the variety of activities and skills required to bring a performance together. Students are required to provide supporting written evidence to explain decision making and also including a rehearsal timetable, knowledge of health and safety and research into the set stimuli.

Students will have the opportunity to perform in school shows and other events. They will also participate in workshops with visiting dancers or companies and attend theatre trips to see live dance performances.
