Modern Foreign Languages at The Cornerstone Academy

KS3 French

In years 7, 8 and 9, students learn the foundations of the language. They learn to recognise the key sounds and common spellings of words.  Spoken French becomes more fluent as students are much more confident with pronunciation and intonation.

Year 9

  • Relationships
  • Festivals and traditions
  • City or region in a francophone country

KS4 French

The French GCSE consists of four externally examined papers based on the following skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  

Themes and Topics

Questions across all four language skills are set in common contexts, addressing a range of relevant contemporary and cultural themes.

  • Theme: Lifestyle and Wellbeing
  • Theme: My Neighbourhood
  • Theme: Media and Technology
  • Theme: Studying and my future
  • Theme: Travel and Tourism

Students will be able to listen to, speak, read and write about the following subjects:

Family, Friends, Relationships, Equality, Physical Well-being, Mental well-being, Food and drink, Sports, Places in town, Shopping, Transport, The natural world, Environmental issues, Social media and gaming, Future opportunies, School, Music, TV and film, Accomodation and Tourist attractions.

4 papers - each worth 25% of the total grade

Paper 1: Speaking

Read aloud follow up interaction.

Role play.

Picture description.

General conversation.

Paper 2: Listening

Listening comprehension questions - all questions on the paper written in English.

Paper 3: Reading

Reading comprehensions questions plus translation.

Paper 4: Writing

Longer written answers plus translation into French.
